Home Again - Carol King
I woke up this morning with a bit of this song in my head and my mind reached out and grabbed the whole thing. Oh, how I loved this album! (Tapestry) SO many wonderful songs. I have a lot of emotional sense memories related to so many of the songs in this album, and they bring me right back to 1971 when I was 17 and every day was another drama.
In those days I lived and breathed music. As I grew older, music seemed to occupy less and less of my time, but there was always the music playing in my head. I am really loving this blog because it has connected me to the music I love again. So when I get a nasty little earworm like Fish Heads, it’s still worthwhile because the good music far outweighs the bad, and it brings me so much joy!
I’m trying something new, making a link available if you’d like to purchase the song I’ve just talked about. If you’d like to purchase the mp3 download of this song or the

Let me know if you like having the videos, the links for buying the songs, and whether you prefer links to open in a new window or not. I’d like to make things as easy as possible for people. Okay, enough housekeeping, on to the music!
That Ol’ Black Magic - Louis Prima and Keely Smith written by Johnny Mercer and Harold Arlen
It’s 8:20 am and I’m still in bed, trying to get back to sleep. I didn’t actually hear this song. What I heard was the rhythm riff between the first and second verses. It took a while for me to figure out what song it came from. Why it appeared in my mind this morning, I’ll never know. It’s another thing I like about keeping this blog. It’s fascinating to see my mind jumps around without apparent rhyme or reason.
I remember this song from my childhood. The YouTube clip below is from a TV show in the 50′s.

Piano Man - Billy Joel
I’m still in bed and still awake at 8:35 am (probably because I was trying to figure out where that riff came from). The Piano Man is a welcome friend, so I think maybe I’ll be able to fall back to sleep.

This appears to be an video made by the record company. The people they casted for the characters don’t look anything like I pictured in my mind.
Mama Told Me Not To Come - Three Dog Night – written by Randy Newman
I’m STILL in bed, and still awake at 8:45 am when Mama Told Me Not To Come starts playing.
When I looked up the song on Wikipedia, I learned some really interesting things. First, I was blown away that it was written by Randy Newman. I didn’t become aware of Randy Newman until “Short People,” which wasn’t released until 1977. Secondly, this song was written for Eric Burden of the Animals for his first solo album in 1966. Randy Newman recorded his own version in 1970, but it wasn’t until Three Dog Night released their recording in the same year that it became a hit. Who knew? There’s a wealth of information in Wikipedia!

The Unicorn - The Irish Rovers – written by Shel Silverstein
I’m Skyping with my sister who complains that she can only see half of my face because of the way my laptop screen is tilted. I tell her if I change the way I’m sitting she’ll be able to see all of my face. She tells me to sit up straight or you’ll get a hump. And what comes into my head is “humpy-backed whales,” which I thought was a line in The Unicorn. The line is actualy “some humpty-back camels.” It took a while for me to get to the name of the song (no wonder!) but thanks to my friend Google, I found it rather quickly.
And my friend Wikipedia tells me The Unicorn was written by Shel Silverstein who wrote The Giving Tree! OMG! The Irish Rovers were a band out of Canada who released this song in 1968.

New York State Of Mind - Billy Joel
It’s 10:45 am and I’ve finished Skyping with my sister. I read an article my sister sent to me from the NY Times about a roast beef place from the neighborhood where I grew up in Brooklyn. I’m making breakfast, thinking that maybe I’ll read yesterday’s Sunday New York Times (which I have delivered to me here all the way in the hinterlands of Mankato) because I didn’t have a chance to even look at it yesterday. No wonder I started hearing Billy talking about his longing for New York. Me too.

Fish Heads – Barnes and Barnes
It turns out that not only hadn’t I read yesterday’s Sunday New York Times, but I never read last WEEK’s Sunday New York Times. Being the linear person that I am, I had to read last week’s paper before today’s paper. While I was reading said paper at about noon, I read an article about a Web site called Timehop. I wanted to remember it and didn’t have a pen, and my short term memory leaves much to be desired, so I started repeating it to myself. Time hop Time hop, Time hop, Time hop, fell into the rhythm of Fish Heads, Fish Heads and before I new it the nasty little buggers were back!
Today, I looked up Barnes and Barnes in Wikipedia, and to my surprise found out that one of the Barnes is none other than Bill Mumy of “Lost In Space” fame. This song came out in 1978. It came out that long ago and I only heard of it last week? (Thank the Goddess!)
For those of you who have missed this gem of a video, you can find it in my post, “Fish Heads and Mean Kitties in White Satin in the Bleak Midwinter By The Beautiful Sea – January 7th 2012“
Sunshine On My Shoulders - John Denver
It’s 12:35 pm and I’m back at my computer. A friend of mine posted a poem about Sunlight and it made me think of this song which is a favorite of mine. Whenever I hear it, I go back to the spring/summer of 1974. I’m 17 and I’m sitting on the grass in Marine Park, Brooklyn, with my friends, playing this song on my guitar and we all sing. Good times, those. According to Wikipedia, “Sunshine On My Shoulders” was written right here in Minnesota.

Get Me To The Church On Time - Stanley Holloway - From the Broadway Musical, “My Fair Lady” Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, music by Frederick Loewe
The rest of my day was very busy learning how to link to Amazon and looking up songs and performers and helping a friend. We watched some TV after supper. When we finished watching the latest episode of Castle, (one of my favorite shows) it was 10:35 pm and I realized Get Me To The Church On Time was playing in my head. The episode had nothing to do with marriage, so there’s no connection there. Just the odd workings of my mind.
My brother and I used to love listening to and singing along with this album, so I know all the songs by heart – well at least MOST of the words to MOST of the songs.
